ABOUT
Surdam’s images of postgraduate life in rural communities surrounding American universities convey the surreal challenges facing those who have invested deeply in their educations but remain unable to migrate to the urban centers designed to support them as adults. As cost of living soars in creative capitals like New York and Los Angeles, the opportunities afforded by urban life slip frustratingly out of reach for many young graduates. Forced to remain in the isolated rural communities where their studies once provided a stimulating creative outlet, many languidly embrace the idle pace of contemporary country lifestyle. In these works, Surdam captures the very essence of the false starts, frustrations, and lackluster living which confront otherwise ambitious, highly creative young people in America today.
