NEW YORK, November 13, 2014—A+E Studios is pleased to present Outside and Her, a collaboration between photographer Daisy Johnson and painter Annie Shinn. The collaboration pushes the aesthetic boundaries of both artists, resulting in an emergent and powerful study that collides the natural world with its subject.
A physical confrontation with landscapes of the scale photographed in this show quickly remind us of our own transience—summoning incidental emotions that force a type of introspection we rarely face. As the emotional state rapidly recedes to the background, these works aspire to live longer than the emotional experience itself.
Both artists share the idea that literal reiterations of landscapes can only successfully serve as mementos of the original physical experience and in their past work have employed different techniques and mediums in order to develop a unique and individual voice on an objective theme. Johnson typically adds a figure to such landscapes, to create an authentic and dynamic composition, while Shinn, a classically trained painter, chooses to render landscapes through varying forms of abstraction.
In their collaboration, both artists discovered how the thoughtful mingling of such different aesthetic techniques results in an even stronger and clearer visual investigation of the landscape as comprised of both physical objectivity and subjective perception.
Shinn heightens Johnson’s large-scale black and white photographs with the addition of abstract, non-traditional colors; meanwhile, Johnson’s photographs serve as grounding for Shinn’s fantastical style, allowing one another’s work to take on new form and identity.
